What is an Audio-Play?An Audio-Play is an auditory theatrical experience. Think radio play, podcasts and audio guides. Specifically, the "the-ear-tre" project was interested in “site-specific” Audio-Plays, where the listener/audience starts the theatrical experience at a designated place, and is guided in a tour of the location with instructions from the Audio-Play.

“Massey Theatre has been the center point of my 4 high school years…[The presentation] really portrays what I’ve seen of Massey theatre the past 4 years and over my life so far!” |
Our ProjectThe Summer Workshops:
In the summer of 2015, Two Gents of New West ran a series of Audio-Play creation workshops, led by Chris Gatchalian. Interested youths of New Westminster were given the opportunity to tour in Massey Theatre, receive an orientation to research in the city's archive, and share with each other their written works. This series of workshops became a useful resource for us later when we wrote our final Audio-Play presentation. The Story: For the showcase presentation, we adapted a story by long time New West resident Evelyn Benson's book, "A Century In A Small Town: One Family's Stories". Her father, J. Lewis Sangster, was the mayor of New Westminster who was avidly involved in the proposal of a new auditorium for the junior high school, which later became Massey Theatre. Audio-play presentation: The 17 minute long audio play takes the listener on a tour of Massey Theatre as they learn and reminisce with the narrator about the changes to Massey through the eyes of a young girl. The Audio-play presentation took place as part of the MOMENTUM Youth Arts Movement in the Plaskett Gallery. Videographer: Will Clements Photographer: Jenni Slinn |
Are you interested in launching a The-Ear-tre installation for your community/organization? Or have an idea for a great Audio-play in New Westminster?
